Charlotte FC’s defender, Harrison Afful, couldn’t contain his excitement after facing off against none other than the legendary Lionel Messi, who now dons the colors of Inter Miami.
The thrilling match between the two teams culminated in a 4-0 victory for Inter Miami on a memorable Friday evening, but it was the symbolic jersey exchange between Afful and Messi that truly stole the spotlight.
Harrison Afful started the game and lasted 83 minutes. The 37-year-old was replaced by former Whitecaps Academy youngster Brandon Cambridge.
Josef Martinez scored from the penalty spot for Inter Miami in the 12th minute, and Thomas Taylor doubled the lead in the 32nd minute.
Adilson Malanda of Charlotte FC scored an own goal in the 78th minute before Lionel Messi clinched the victory for Inter Miami with an 86th-minute strike.
After the game, the former Black Stars right-back swapped jerseys with Lionel Messi, who strolled away with a big smile.
