The government wants to reintroduce road charges in 2025

The government has decided on measures for the reintroduction in 2025.

The Minister of Finance, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, announced this in Parliament on Tuesday, July 23rd, during the presentation of the mid-year review of fiscal policy for 2024.

On November 18, 2021, former Minister of Roads, Mr. Kwasi Amoako-Atta, ordered the suspension of toll collection at various toll plazas across the country.

The directive came after former Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, announced the abolition of road tolls during the presentation of the 2022 budget.

However, the government reversed the decision and approved the development of a framework for the reintroduction of road and bridge tolls in 2025. “Mr. Speaker, Cabinet has also approved the expenditure of an additional 1.5 billion Ghana cedis to settle outstanding claims against the Financial Management Company and to provide a framework for the reintroduction of
road and bridge tolls in 2025,” he added. Dr. Amin Adamu also said the government has “approved amendments to the Fiscal Responsibility Act to operationalize the Integrated Property Tax Scheme and to reintroduce the numerical benchmarks that were suspended in 2020.”
