The West African Examination Council(WAEC) has vowed to ensure that teachers and invigilators who are arrested for engaging in examination malpractice in the ongoing Basic Education Certificate Examination(BECE) are prosecuted.
It follows the arrest of some teachers in Bekawi in the Ashanti Region and invigilators at Gyinigyini in the Jaman North District.
They were picked up by operatives of the National Intelligence Bureau and GES officials.
The examination annually has recorded incidents of malpractices which has raised concerns over the integrity of the exam.
Speaking to Starr News, the Head of Public Affairs at WAEC, John Kapi said they will submit details of the teachers and invigilators arrested to the Ghana Education Service for prosecution.
“They are going to face prosecution because the WAEC laws say that anybody who has in his or her possession a question in any form be it electronic or hard form has flouted the rule and is punishable by law. They are going to be charged at the law court and prosecuted.
“We are also going to submit the list of these invigilators because they are teachers, as I said we are not the employing agency, it is the GES that employs them. So we will send their names to their employers and we expect that at least some punishment will be meted out to them to prevent them from repeating or even having others do what these have done.”
