Police in Tamale have apprehended Alhassan Lukman, a teacher, for illegally transferring voter registrations from polling stations in Tamale South and Sagnarigu constituencies.
The suspect is accused of collecting voter ID cards under the guise of assisting voters with support from some Arabs, only for the voters to later discover their registrations had been transferred to Pusiga in the Upper East Region.
The irregularities were discovered when voters checked their names during the ongoing voter register exhibition exercise and found that their details had been moved.
Alarmed by this discovery, they reported the issue to the Tamale Metro Police, leading to Lukman’s arrest.
In response, the Northern Region leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the Electoral Commission (EC).
The party demands that the EC identify and arrest any officials facilitating the illegal transfer of voter registrations.
The NDC has warned that failure to address the issue promptly will undermine the Electoral Commission’s credibility.
