Nana Akomea has bemoaned government’s inability to curb the illegal menace (galamsey) in the country.
The STC Chief Executive, on Peace FM‘s Tuesday edition of “Kokrokoo” show, stressed the galamsey issue has been a major headache for the government as it keeps on going despite efforts to clamp down on this illegal business.
He was disappointed that the matter has degenerated to the extent that the Ghana Water Company Ltd. has issued a warning.
Ghana Water Company Ltd. (GWCL) says “about Sixty percent (60%) of the catchment capacity is silted as a result of illegal mining (galamsey) compromising the quality of raw water. We are currently recording an average turbidity of 14,000 NTU instead of 2000 NTU designed for adequate treatment”.
The company further complains of “severe inconveniences” that galamsey activities are causing to residents in areas like Cape Coast, Elmina and their environs, therefore imploring the citizenry to cooperate with them and the government to fight this canker.
“Your assistance is crucial in helping us restore the quality of the raw water and ensure a reliable water supply of clean drinking water…”, a statement by the company read in part.
To Nana Akomea, it is about time the State authorities stepped in and took an immediate action to stop the galamseyers.
“The River Pra issue as a result of the illegal mining which has contaminated the river making it undrinkable and unsafe for human use is serious. So, immediate action should be taken”, he exclaimed.
He charged the authorities to effectively execute their duties seeing to it that illegal miners cease to operate to avoid the disaster that awaits the nation.
