Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), said agriculture would be his top priority if elected president in the 2024 general election.
He assured farmers that he would work with countries such as Brazil and China, where crop yields are higher, to introduce best practices and technology. Dr. Bawumia promised to establish district agricultural mechanization centers in all agricultural districts to provide affordable equipment to boost production.
He made this remark when he paid a courtesy visit to the Paramount Chief of Builsa Traditional Area in the Upper East Region, as part of his campaign tour.
“Agriculture is my top priority. We make sure we have all the pillars in place for our farmers.
“I want to adopt best practices from countries like Brazil and China, where crops like maize and rice are highly productive. We also want to learn from them and introduce some of the techniques that will enable them to achieve yields per hectare that are two to three times higher than ours.” Bawumia shifts Ghana’s focus away from chemical fertilizers.
“I want Ghana’s soils to switch from chemical fertilizers to lime. Lime is the way forward. We have limestone in Ghana, and it is much cheaper than fertilizer, so we want to support farmers with this new soil fertility treatment through lime.”
