The National Media Commission (NMC) has set up a six-member Media Advisory Committee for Ashanti Region to promote responsible journalism and protect journalists during the 2024 general elections.
Chaired by former NMC Chairman Paul Adu-Gyamfi, the committee aims to combat misinformation and disinformation and ensure safe and free media operations.
Other members include Kwame Adinkra, Olivia Owusu Bannor, Kingsley Elijah Hope, Jonathan Frimpong, and Isaac Frimpong.
NMC Executive Secretary George Sarpong cited the proliferation of media outlets across the country and stressed the need for local monitoring.
He said the committee would protect journalists by harnessing the integrity and expertise of local networks and connecting them with security agencies, electoral commissions, local chiefs and religious leaders.

NMC Chairman Yaw Boadu Ayeboafo appealed to journalists not to allow themselves to be used by politicians for disinformation and misinformation.
“No journalist should allow themselves to be used by politicians for political ends, especially when a story comes to light in relation to this year’s elections,” he said.
Former President of the Ghana Bar Association and Chairman of the Ashanti Region Media Advisory Committee, Mr Paul Addo-Gyamfi, called on the media to take greater responsibility on matters of national interest. “There are cases that are widely reported but are never heard from again.
We need a follow-up… We want the case to be tracked from the moment the news is published to the final verdict in the lawsuit,” he demanded.
