Koku Anyidoho, former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has strongly criticized former President John Mahama for his recent remarks about President Akufo-Addo.
Mahama reportedly referred to Akufo-Addo as “The President Ghana Never Got” during a campaign event. In response, Anyidoho challenged Mahama to participate in a presidential debate or “forget the presidency”.
According to Ghanaweb, Anyidoho argued that if Mahama believes he has solid alternative policies, he should not shy away from a debate to sell his message to Ghanaians. He emphasized that any presidential candidate who avoids a debate on policies is unfit to lead Ghana.
The former NDC official also criticized media houses that previously supported presidential debates but are now silent on the issue. He insisted that at least two presidential debates should take place before the general elections.
Anyidoho’s comments come after NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia challenged Mahama to a debate on policies and economic issues. While Mahama has not officially responded, his aide dismissed the idea of such a debate.
This latest exchange highlights the growing tension between Anyidoho and Mahama, with Anyidoho recently stating that Mahama “is never and has never been my friend”. As the 2024 election approaches, the call for presidential debates continues to be a contentious issue in Ghanaian politics.
