Mahama promises 20% allowance to rural-based teachers, health workers

The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to introduce a 20% allowance for teachers and health workers who accept postings to rural areas.

Addressing party faithful at the launch of the NDC’s manifesto in Winneba, Mahama explained that this incentive aims to encourage more personnel to serve in rural areas, bridging the development gap between rural and urban communities.

Mahama noted that currently, most teachers and health workers prefer to work in urban areas, leaving rural areas with limited access to essential services.

To address this, the NDC government will provide a 20% allowance on top of the basic salary for those who accept rural postings.

“We’ll push ahead basic salary for teachers and health workers who accept postings to rural areas. Most of our teachers and health workers don’t want to go to rural areas, everybody wants to serve in the city.”

“So, we are going to map out what we define as our areas, if you accept posting to go there, you’ll get 20% of your basic salary as an incentive, to teach in the rural area.”
