The Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress, John Dramani Mahama, has stated that his decision to contest the 2024 presidential election stems from a deep sense of responsibility.
According to him, while he initially decided to retire from politics, after handing over power to Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the current state of the economy made him reconsider his decision.
In a video shared on TV3’s YouTube page on Monday, September 16, 2024, Mahama stated, “I was looking forward to retirement after I handed over to Akufo-Addo. I thought I was going to relax and be a statesman. I will be a selfish person if I see the extent to which they have destroyed this country and the debt they have left on us. I have the experience, the knowledge and the integrity, and then I sit at home and say that I will not avail myself to use that experience to turn this country around for my children, Sharaf and Shafik, I will be a very selfish person to do that.”
He urged the youth to maintain hope, assuring them that together, they will work to transform the country, despite the challenges ahead.
“I have the integrity, experience, and knowledge to transform the country. I ask our young people to continue to keep hope alive because the NDC has the men and the women. I know that things are going to be hard. I know the extent to which they have destroyed the economy and the debt they put on this country. It is going to be a difficult job for us. To the youth of this country, we are going to work together to put Ghana back on its feet,” he noted.
