‘Fake’ substandard meters from Côte d’Ivoire invade Ashanti region from – ECG warns

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has warned the public to desist from purchasing ‘fake’ meters from unknown individuals.

According to the service provider, it is the only institution mandated by law to provide meters to the public, adding that, anybody who engaged in such acts would be made to face the law.

Mr Benjamin Obeng Antwi, Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) ECG Public Relation Officer/Ashanti West Region who spoke on OTEC FM breakfast show on Monday June 3, 2024, said the company was concerned with the influx of fake meters in the system, a situation which was negatively impacting revenue mobilisation of the power provider.

Mr Antwi said such fake meters allowed customers to use power free as they were unable to record any consumption.

“ We have information that some of those meters can be traced from Côte d’Ivoire. The whole of the meter case is empty. What is in it is only this one and this one is not any circuit that can measure energy usage, it is only a display board. Within the metre is a bar that connects the output and input terminal directly He told the program’s host Captain Koda.

Some of the fake meters, he said, could easily cause fire outbreaks because of how they were designed and moulded.

Mr Benjamin Obeng Antwi has therefore cautioned prospective customers in the Ashanti Region to desist from acquiring meters from sources other than the company.

He said the company had enough meters to meet the demands of its customers and that the district had been instructed to hasten the meter acquisition process to help address issues of delay.

He encouraged potential customers of ECG and the public to avoid the usage of such fake meters adding that such meters would be discovered by the company as the monitoring and auditing of energy meters and other equipment was done as part of its core activities.
