The vice presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party and former Minister of Education, and Energy, Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has rejected calls to depoliticize the education sector, arguing that the focus should instead be on improving the quality of education in the country.
Speaking at the 57th National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) Congress at KNUST, the former minister stressed that while political interests may influence the sector, the real priority should be ensuring that schools are equipped with the right resources, and infrastructure to deliver quality education to all students.
“I haven’t come across a country where education is not politicised and the attempt to do so rather displays the lack of knowledge on what education is about. We should rather be focusing on quality education and technical and vocational training. The leadership of NUGS should position itself always to be the champion or the beacon of advocacy for quality education in the country”, he stated.
The leadership of the National Union of Ghana Students and other stakeholders had earlier called on relevant authorities to depoliticise education in Ghana, during the 57th NUGS Delegates Congress, themed, “Depoliticising Education and Upholding Integrity: The Role of Students and Stakeholders for National Development”.
