Former President Mahama has commented on the raging calls for data prices to be reduced in Ghana.
According to him, the price of data is based on competition in the industry.
However, one telco has a monopoly because it has the largest network and therefore can increase its prices.
John Dramani Mahama was addressing the youth of Ghana at a town hall meeting to celebrate International Youth Day.
“The thing about data is that it’s about competition. One telco has a monopoly because it has the largest network, so it can increase its price. But if there was competition…If you look at Airtel and Glo, they are lagging, so it’s left with only Vodafone and MTN.
What we have to do is ensure that the other telcos receive the needed support to be able to compete with the giants in the industry to allow for the rates to be reduced,” he said.
He added, “Right now there is a new technology called satellite internet and it is now penetrating space. If it can penetrate, it will help reduce internet rates, and this will bring about competition in space. We also need high-speed internet, that is why we are looking at getting 5G. You can use AI and others with 5G so we will speed up the process so that we can have internet speed for people in the internet space,” he said.
