As a proud member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and a concerned citizen of Ghana, I am compelled to address a deeply troubling and divisive statement made by Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Vice Presidential candidate.
In his recent remarks, NAPO urged a section of Ghanaians not to vote based on the hardships they face but to consider their tribe, specifically calling on Akans to vote for their own. This reckless endorsement of tribalism is not only harmful but a direct threat to the unity and stability of our nation.
At a time when Ghanaians are grappling with severe economic challenges—skyrocketing prices, unemployment, and dwindling hope—the idea that anyone, let alone a leader of national stature, would suggest that tribal affiliation should trump these pressing concerns is not only disappointing but dangerous. It is a blatant attempt to exploit ethnic divisions for political gain, a strategy that has no place in our democracy.
Ghana has a rich history of diversity and unity. Our strength as a nation lies in our ability to come together as one people, regardless of our ethnic backgrounds. The notion that a particular tribe should align politically based on ethnic lines is not only backward but an affront to the very essence of our national identity.
Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s comments have rightly drawn widespread condemnation. Many Ghanaians, across political and ethnic divides, have expressed their disapproval of this divisive rhetoric. Renowned political analysts, civil society organizations, and respected leaders within the NPP itself have distanced themselves from this dangerous line of thinking. It is heartening to see that there are still those within the political landscape who understand the importance of unity and the perils of tribalism.
As an NDC member, I categorically condemn this act of tribalism. But beyond my party affiliation, as a Ghanaian who believes in the potential of our great nation, I reject any attempt to reduce our political choices to ethnic considerations. The challenges we face as a country are not tribal; they are national. The solutions we seek must come from a collective effort, not a divided one.
It is time for us as a people to rise above such parochial sentiments. Our future as a nation depends on our ability to work together, regardless of where we come from. We must reject the politics of division and embrace a vision of Ghana that is inclusive, forward-thinking and united.
In conclusion, I call on all Ghanaians to make their political decisions based on the issues that affect their lives and the lives of their children. Let us vote for policies that will bring prosperity, security, and development to every corner of our nation. Let us reject those who seek to divide us and stand together as one people, with one destiny. Tribalism has no place in the Ghana we are building, and it is our collective responsibility to ensure it does not take root in our politics.
