Calls for Bawumia to apologise for Ghana’s economic difficulties are baseless – Agyapa Mercer

Member of Parliament for the Sekondi Constituency,Andrew Egyapa Mercer has dismissed recent calls for New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to apologise for Ghanaians’ economic difficulties.

According to him, the demands for an apology are baseless.

His comment followed Finance Minister Mohammed Amin Adam’s apology on August 6 for the economic strain caused by the Domestic Debt Exchange Program (DDEP).

While some praised the apology, others, including former President John Mahama, argued it should not have come from the Finance Minister.

Speaking on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem, Mercer questioned the rationale behind blaming Dr. Bawumia and the government for the economic crisis, attributing the hardships to a combination of internal and external factors.

He pointed out that external influences, such as the disruption in supply chains due to the Russia-Ukraine war, have significantly impacted freight costs and the broader economy.

“Dr. Bawumia has openly acknowledged the challenges and has been proactive in addressing them. He has not shirked responsibility but rather has made tough decisions in difficult times,” Mercer stated.

He emphasized that the focus should be on implementing effective measures and social policies to mitigate the impact of these external shocks, rather than seeking apologies.

Mercer reaffirmed Dr. Bawumia’s commitment to leading and rebuilding Ghana, underscoring that the government’s priority is to support the populace and tackle the economic challenges head-on.
