NDC gender committee unveils ‘manifesto desk’ in Ledzokuku

The Gender, Women, Children and Social Protection Committee of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) took its innovative ‘Manifesto Desk’ to the Ledzokuku Constituency, over the weekend.

The ‘Manifesto Desk’ aims at deepening voter engagement ahead of the 2024 general elections. The innovative platform, part of the NDC’s *Smile Again Campaign*, was set up in Teshie Tsuibloo, Accra, on Saturday, September 21, 2024 to provide residents with direct access to party communicators and key proposals from the recently unveiled Resetting Ghana 2024 NDC Manifesto.

The Manifesto Desk allows voters to have face-to-face interactions with NDC representatives, addressing their questions and concerns while offering insights into the party’s comprehensive policy framework.

A Strategic Move in a Key Battleground

Ledzokuku, a crucial swing constituency in Ghanaian politics, was flipped by the NDC in 2020 when Hon. Ben Ayiku unseated the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Nii Okoe Boye in a hotly contested race.

The NDC is determined to retain the seat in the upcoming elections, with the Manifesto Desk initiative serving as part of its strategy to cement influence in this fishing and trading community.

Key Policy Promises for Ledzokuku

The Manifesto Desk provided a platform for NDC communicators to outline several policies tailored to the needs of Ledzokuku residents.

The NDC pledged to reform the distribution of premix fuel, a critical issue for local fisherfolk, ensuring fairer and more transparent access.

These reforms aim to prevent the favoritism that has historically plagued fuel distribution, thereby improving livelihoods in this coastal constituency.

National Policies on Display

While the initiative focused on local concerns, the Manifesto Desk also highlighted broader national policies designed to appeal to a wide voter base.

Among the key national initiatives were the *Free Primary Healthcare Programme*, the *Ghana Medical Trust Fund* (*Mahama Care*), and the *Mo Ne Yo Pension Programme*.

Other prominent policies include women-centric proposals like the *Free Sanitary Pad Programme*, the establishment of a National Women’s Bank, and support for persons with disabilities, including free tertiary education for disabled students.

Community Engagement and Feedback

Residents of Ledzokuku responded positively to the initiative, appreciating the chance to engage directly with NDC communicators. The face-to-face discussions allowed for real-time feedback, with many constituents sharing their views on the party’s plans.

One local market woman praised the NDC’s *Market Enhancement Project*, stating:

“This modern market will really help us. It’s something we’ve needed for years, and I’m glad the NDC is addressing it.”

The initiative is expected to be expanded to other key constituencies as the NDC intensifies its grassroots engagement and voter education efforts.

The Road to 2024

As the December 7 elections approach, the NDC is ramping up its efforts to retain key parliamentary seats like Ledzokuku, while also seeking to secure the presidency for John Dramani Mahama.

The *Manifesto Desk* is seen as a critical tool in this strategy, providing a direct line of communication between the party and the electorate.
