Ghanaian winger Stephen Afrifa shines with assist in Sporting KC’s victory over Chicago Fire

Canadian-born Ghanaian winger Stephen Afrifa played a crucial role in Sporting Kansas City’s 2-1 triumph over Chicago Fire FC in the Leagues Cup.

The match, held at Children’s Mercy Park, saw Afrifa contribute an assist in the 76th minute, setting up William Agada’s header that secured the win.

Before the game, the head-to-head record between the two teams stood at 10 wins for Sporting Kansas City, 8 for Chicago Fire FC, and 4 draws. Afrifa started the match and played for 84 minutes, showcasing his skill and impact on the field.

Chicago Fire FC opened the scoring in the 22nd minute with a goal from Georgios Koutsias, assisted by Brian Gutiérrez. However, Sporting Kansas City equalized in the 39th minute through Robert Castellanos, who headed in a cross from Rémi Walter following a set piece.

The decisive moment came in the 76th minute when Afrifa delivered a precise cross that Agada headed into the top left corner, securing the victory for Sporting Kansas City.

Sporting Kansas City will next face Mexican side Toluca on August 6th, aiming to continue their winning momentum.
