Mr Hopeson Adorye, Special Duty Officer of the Movement for Change, criticised the government of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, blaming the president’s reliance on “family and friends” for the economic challenges facing Ghanaians.
In an interview with Oyerepa TV on 17 July 2024, Adorye expressed disappointment with the state of the country and suggested that the president’s close relatives involved in the governance process were primarily responsible for the country’s difficulties.
He noted that despite his initial promises and determination to transform Ghana, President Akufo-Addo was misled by his family, leading to poor decisions and governance problems.
“You can see that everyone is expressing disappointment in the government, so we should go after someone who will change the narrative,” Adorye said.
He acknowledged that as a former member of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) he was part of the government but stressed that confidence in Akufo-Addo’s leadership was misplaced due to the influence of certain family members.
Adorye specifically mentioned former Minister of Finance, Mr. Ken Ofori-Atta, Presidential Secretary, Mr. Asante Bediatuo and Mr. Gabby Otchere Darko, cousin of the President, as key figures in the President’s entourage who contributed to the needs. Participants from the President’s country contributed.
He accused these people of impeding progress and prioritizing their own interests.
“Someone will accuse me of being involved, and of course, yes, I am involved. But I believed that Akufo-Addo had the will and the passion to change this country, but he allowed himself to be misled by his family.
“How can we move forward if Ken Ofori-Atta and Akufo-Addo told Pa Kwesi Nduom to pay the money and he said he would not pay?
“The family around him have let him down. Let me tell you, Akufo-Addo was determined to change this country and I swear to God that his family have failed him. This is why people say that the influence of family and friends in government is bad. Asante Bediatuo, Gabby Otchere Darko and the rest,” he added.
