Police gives NDC MPs green light to reload #OccupyBoGDemo on July 30th.

The Minority Caucus of Parliamentarians has received approval from the Greater Accra Regional Police Command to take part in the #OccupyBoGDemo Reload protest on July 30, 2024, demanding the removal of the Governor of the Bank of Ghana and his deputy. This follows a meeting between National Democratic Congress (NDC) MPs and the police on July 16, 2024, where the modalities of the protest were discussed. A statement signed by DCOP Arhin Kwasi Anor stated: “The route of your protest will be Obra Spot-Adabraka Farisko-Ridge Roundabout-National Theatre Traffic Light-High Court Complex before branching off to Atta Mills Highway and ending at the Kwame Nkrumah Museum.”. You will select 10 protesters to present a petition to the authorities. The organisers have the following tasks: “Ensure that protesters conduct themselves peacefully before, during, and after the demonstration.”

The Police Command assured NDC MPs of its continued cooperation and commitment to comply with legal aid orders for planned public demonstrations within the mandate of the Ghana Police Service.

After a failed attempt to present a petition at the first demonstration, the minority in parliament decided to demonstrate again against Dr. Ernest Addison to stop him.

It should be noted that on Tuesday, October 3, 2023, a coalition of minority MPs, NDC supporters, and various interest groups organised the #OccupyBoG demonstration to demand the resignation of Dr. Addison, and his deputies spoke of economic mismanagement and the alleged illegal printing of currency notes.

During a protest march through the streets of Accra, an attempt by the minority to personally hand over the petition to the governor was thwarted as they were met instead by the security chief. Not satisfied with the move, opposition members and the surrounding crowd called for direct contact with the governor on issues relating to the Bank of Ghana’s policies and operations.
